Dear Compassionate Friends, Supporters, and Colleagues,

At this critical moment amid our nation’s changing federal immigration policies, we are offering a way to provide a local, emergency response to care for refugees and other legal immigrants. Please take these few minutes to consider how we might partner together to bring hope to hundreds of frightened, distressed, even desperate, but truly worthy “foreigners” in Delaware and SE Pennsylvania.

A local nonprofit, Compassion Corps, which has mobilized volunteer services and well over a million dollars in aid to impoverished African nations over the past 20 years, has determined to help launch a new stream of compassionate services for local refugees:  Compassion Immigration Services (CIS).

If you share our concerns and want more information...

How YOU can help:

Will you consider helping us with startup funding or possibly make a commitment to monthly contributions? Private investment in our services for refugees is critical while we await grant funding. We can’t make this dream a reality without the partnership of others who share our compassionate concerns.

Together we can accomplish this, for their sake.

Gratefully,

Jan Bean

Since Bethany Christian Services closed its Delaware refugee resettlement office a year ago, Jan, who formerly directed Bethany’s Delaware office, has stepped up in a remarkable way. Over the past 12 months, she has provided critical immigration and refugee support across Northern and Central-Delaware, all as a full-time volunteer. Her efforts have included helping clients secure IDs, driver’s licenses, EBT cards, jobs, medical care, and transportation to essential appointments.

Many refugee families in the region have found safe, affordable housing thanks to Crystal Clear Property Management, which Rich co-owns. It has been so meaningful to provide comfortable, renovated homes in safe urban neighborhoods and sending his work crews to assist with household repairs when needed.

Jeremiah has played a vital role in launching our new nonprofit, bringing sharp technical and operational insight to help us build a more sustainable future. Having traveled multiple times to Africa with Compassion Corps, he brings a deep personal commitment to serving vulnerable communities. Thanks to his guidance, we have been legally certified to operate both in Pennsylvania and Delaware under the Compassion Corps banner - originally co-founded in 2005 in PA by Jan Bean and Beth McMillen, and now we are also registered as a new 501(c)(3) entity to operate in DE as Compassion Immigration Services.

Much of our success to date has been made possible through generous partnerships with individuals, churches, and civic groups. The Chairman of our Board of Directors, Rev. Jonathan Seda, has personally logged countless hours supporting refugee families in his Dover, DE, community. We are grateful for our two other Board members, Maria Glockner and Paola Oviedo, as well as for Jason Groves, a corporate lawyer, Danielle Bossert, and Chris Bliden, who are serving on our Board of Advisors.

Our work takes place wherever our families need us, whether in their homes, state social service offices, medical clinics like TriState Health in Newark and Elkton, USCIS offices in Dover and Philadelphia, or churches like Grace Church in Dover. A major hub of activity has been our spacious King Street office in Wilmington, generously offered by Rich. This location has proven ideal for hosting multilingual information sessions and, once approved by the Department of Justice, will serve as a site for providing DOJ-recognized legal immigration services.

While we will continue to rely heavily on volunteer and in-kind support, our long-term goal is to secure sustainable funding that allows us to hire staff, including those from among the outstanding refugee community members we serve.

Compassion Corps’ 20 years of service

have been in response to Jesus’ mandate

to show true compassion to those in need in these ways:

“I was in captivity & you came to me”: (captive to poverty, disease, disaster, & oppression)

  • Sending 50 Short-term Teams to 7 countries

“I was hungry & you gave me something to eat”:

  • Visiting & providing care, food & resources to at least 16 orphanages in all 7 countries

“I was naked & you clothed me”:

  • Providing clothing &/or shoes for the children in all the orphanages we visited

  • Building 2 large dormitories & providing beds & bedding for 70 orphan children in Liberia

“I was thirsty & you gave me something to drink”:

  • Installing 7 pure water wells & two well pump systems in Mali, Liberia, & Uganda

“I was sick & you visited me”:

  • Mobile clinics serving over 6,000 people in Mali, Senegal, Liberia, Morocco, Haiti & Uganda

  • Construction of a Maternity Annex & a Health Clinic in Liberia

  • Construction of a Community Health Center in Uganda

Prioritizing education & sustainability for ongoing provision of care:

  • Addressing the education crisis in Liberia & Uganda by building 3 schools, resourcing 12, repairing 3 others, sponsoring the education for 60+ students in Liberia & Uganda, training teachers, librarians & administrators from dozens of schools

  • Sending partners a container full of tools & 10,000 books for schools & a college in Liberia

  • Helping to create sustainable income for many in Liberia through funding farming initiatives, vocational training & building a youth center for training in agricultural skills

  • Helping to revive Liberia’s devastated coffee industry through training & empowering over                           400 coffee farmers & facilitating the development of farmers’ cooperatives

  • Training several hundred physical therapists & staff in special needs centers & orphanages in Morocco & Tunisia; also running summer camps in Morocco & Uganda to provide extra-curriculars for children & vocational training for women

And now: “I was a stranger, and you invited me in”
